Don Caine founds C & M Products with one product and one employee. His first product was TPA, Trailer Plumbing Antifreeze. He and his wife Teresa, his one employee, mixed the antifreeze by hand in a 55 gallon drum with a big two by two plank. They worked in a 5000 square foot building on Gate City Boulevard in Greensboro, N.C. The work was laborious and draining, and they oftentimes found themselves working Saturdays and Sundays just to get all the product ready in time.
After a few years of growth, C & M Products became Camco Manufacturing and added a second product, the Open Coil Water Heater Element. They moved locations within Greensboro and expanded to 11,000 square feet.
At this time, RVing became popular and the industry exploded. Camco Manufacturing debuted a few more new products, designed specifically for RVs: BanFrost antifreeze, water heater bypass kits, water hoses and heat tapes.
Camco reaches $1 million in annual sales
By the early 80s, Camco had 20-30 employees and found itself needing more room once again. It moved to its current location on Landmark Drive, into a 20,000 square foot building.
Camco continued to expand its range of RV products and accessories, and in the mid-80s acquired one of its flagship brands: TST. TST has been an ongoing success in the RVing industry, allowing families to enjoy time in the RVs and trailers without being bothered by unwanted odors. It features three different scents in Drop-Ins, single use bottled liquid, and bulk liquid and a unique formula that allows it to break down waste, while blocking odors from escaping.
Camco opens a manufacturing facility in Elkhart, Indiana where it produces windshield washer fluid and RV antifreeze.
Camco begins RV Sewer hose production in Greensboro. A year later, the company adds another 18,000 square feet of space to its Greensboro facility and begins injection molding.
A few years later, Don was at a horse show with his wife, when they both commented on the smog from the trailers. All the RVs, trailers, generators and large trucks were gathered in one field together, and it was difficult to walk through them all without choking on the collective smog. Don brought his complaint back to Camco, and together with their engineering department developed the Gen-Turi Generator Exhaust Venting System. It helped move smoke out and up from the exhaust pipe, leaving the walking space air clear for everyone to enjoy.
Camco reaches $20 million in annual sales.
Camco adds another 63,000 square feet to their Greensboro headquarters, and opens up another manufacturing facility in Portland, Oregon. The company also distributes products to West Coast customers from this facility.
Later, Camco created another flagship brand: PowerGrip accessories. Once again, Don noticed a hole in the market. It was difficult to plug-in and especially unplug electrical adapters without risking electrocution! A simple idea caught on, making Power Grip one of Camco’s most well-known recognized brands. Camco also adds Eaz-Lift, Olympian RV Accessories and Trailer Aid to its growing list of brands.
The Greensboro facility expands another 204,750 square feet, and Camco adds another facility in Leominster, Massachusetts.
Camco reaches $100 million in sales and adds a facility closer to home in Reidsville, North Carolina.
Camco relocates its Portland facility to Albany, Oregon in order to continue expanding its production capabilities .
Camco acquires Hydro Life and begins production of Hydro Life Filter Systems. It also adds 172,000 square feet of space to its Greensboro facility.
Camco has always held a commitment to its employees and its country. By working with inventers, entrepreneurs and small businesses, Camco has been able to bring and keep products in the market.
